If you are planning on flying on any leg of your journey to Boulder, lugging a bunch of flyfishing gear through airport security checks is a stressful proposition at best. It is much easier to just leave everything at home and let your guide take care of the equipment. If you have a new rod and reel that you are anxious to try or and old favorite, by all means bring it along. Or if you are driving and don't mind bringing all of your own gear, fine. But in the event that you choose the path of least resistance, everything will be provided for you.
If you are a novice or total beginner, hiring a guide is the perfect time to find out what equipment you really need and what not to bother with. If you buy one of everything that is supposed to hang from your vest, you would be a walking flyshop! Just a little of this and a few of those starts to add up. There are certain tools that any flyfisher can't do without. But some of the gear that anglers will carry with them is better left in their tool box or garage. Your guide will always have more than the average angler should be carrying because he is always repairing your outfit. But for the average flyfisher, learning how to minimize can really take a load off.
